What's On

Meeting

Our main gathering each week is after the 5pm student mass on Sunday at The Old School House. The mass is normally followed by a dinner and a social event. We also meet up on Wednesday evenings, at 7pm for informal talks on theological topics, given by our chaplain. The detailed programme is the following:

2009/2010 Spring Term - Sunday Events

  • 17 Jan: Movie night
Bring some DVDs along and we'll have a vote!
  • 24 Jan: Burns' Night
A supper to celebrate the life of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns (born 25 Jan). The highlights of the evening include haggis, Scotch whisky and a reading of one of Burns' poems. The haggis is, of course, preceded by the address.
  • 31 Jan: Fry the Friar
Are certain aspects of the faith puzzling? Nonsensical? Bring them along, and anonymously put them forward to our chaplain. Hold nothing back - our chaplain, like any good Dominican, craves to expound the truth!
  • 7 Feb: Laser Quest
  • 14 Feb: Games Night
Tumblin Monkeys, Guitar Hero, Monopoly and more!
  • 21 Feb: Annual General Meeting (AGM)
This is when we elect a new committee, and is also an opportunity for you to express any opinions you have about the way the society is run. We really need people to get involved with the running of the society, as a lot of the current committee are graduating this year. It's a lot of fun and you get to work with a fantastic bunch of people.

If you want to be part of the team that organises all our events etc, then there is a sign up sheet on the wall in the Old School House. Positions up for grabs are: Leicester President, DMU President, Treasurer, Social Sec, Secretary, Marketing Officer
  • 28 Feb: Pudding in the pub
  • 7 Mar: Chaplain's party
The Chaplain's party is an opportunity to chill out and relax, enjoy great food and drink and meet people. Altogether, a fantastic evening.
  • 14th Mar: Ampleforth retreat
Ampleforth Abbey is a beautiful monastery in North Yorkshire and houses the largest community of Benedictine monks in England. We will be traveling to and fro by coach, leaving Friday afternoon and returning Sunday afternoon. There will be opportunities to socialize, to explore the grounds, to receive the Sacrament of Penance and pray the office in choir with the monks. The price of £30 is inclusive of the travel and full bed and board.
  • 21th Mar: A talk by Sr. Valerie Walker O.P.

2009/2010 Spring Term - Wednesday's Theology in Film

From Lord of the Rings to the Godfather Trilogy - everything goes!

  • 20 Jan: Dead Poets Society
  • 27 Jan: The Truman Show
  • 3 Feb: Skittles with the Catenians
The Catenians are an organisation of Catholic businessmen, and are incredibly generous to us. They give us a lift to and fro, a meal and a drink. It will be a really good evening - highly recommended!

Sign up sheets, including a menu choice are in the Old School House.
  • 10 Feb: As Good as it Gets
  • 17 Feb: No talk. Ash Wednesday Mass at 12:30 at UoL & DMU; 10:00, 12:30 and 18:00 at Holy Cross Church.
  • 24 Feb: Gosford Park
  • 3 Mar: Children of a Lesser god
  • More films - stay tuned!
